Clinical Lab Assistant Lead

  • Salary range: $15.58 – $24.70 per hour (based on relevant experience)

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • CLIAFE – must comply with CLIA regulations regarding foreign education equivalency required.
  • 3 years phlebotomy experience in a medical setting required.
  • 1-year Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience working with Cerner Millennium software
  • PBT (ASCP) – Phlebotomy Technician preferred upon hire.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills.

Position Responsibilities: Texas Health Dallas Lead Clinical Lab Assistant will follow laboratory procedure for specimen collection, handling and processing in a manner which is appropriate to the age of the patient.

In addition to the required qualifications, a successful Lead CLA will:

Specimen collection and processing

  • Follows laboratory procedure for specimen collection, handling and processing in a manner which is appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for handling unacceptable specimens.
  • Resolves pending specimen issues.
  • Coordinates timed, routine, ASAP, and STAT draws to prevent multiple sticks to the patient and to prevent excessive blood volume draws.
  • Uses two identifiers according to hospital policy when collecting and processing specimens.
  • Responds to CODEs when appropriate.
  • Responds to requests to complete difficult blood collection for hospital personnel.
  • Ensures test orders are initiated and resolves any discrepancies.
  • Reviews physician orders to ensure all tests are ordered in LIS.
  • Timed, ASAP and STAT draws are drawn and processed within established time frames.
  • Communication with nursing personnel as needed to clarify orders or inform of specimen integrity issues.
  • Understands and relays information on specimen requirements for in-house and reference lab testing.
  • Accurate entry of client information and test orders into LIS.
  • Specimens processed accurately and in a timely manner for referral tests.
  • Monitors tests ordered and adds on or cancels tests as needed.
  • Proficiency in all laboratory IS systems as they pertain to laboratory data (i.e. CareConnect, SMS, ARUP, etc.).
  • Coordinates workflow for phlebotomy/processing department to maximize efficiency.
  • Implements and coordinates computer downtime procedures as needed.



  • Test results communicated as directed by fax or phone report.
  • Emails read and responded to in a timely manner.
  • Accountability demonstrated for information contained in emails.
  • Communicates appropriately to supervisors regarding issues.
  • Proper phone etiquette observed.
  • Correct information regarding testing protocols and procedures given to clients.
  • Policies, procedures, and staff meeting minutes signed in a timely manner.
  • Self-evaluation completed prior to due date.
  • Acts as shift supervisor or charge phlebotomist in supervisor's absence.
  • Takes calls from physicians, staff and patients and follows up on issues.
  • Assist with writing policies and procedures, updating manuals, informing staff verbally and by email of changes.
  • May present information at staff meetings pertinent to department.
  • Communicates issues to appropriate resources for resolution.
  • Acts as liaison between laboratory and other departments.
  • Writes, responds, and follows up on incident reports.


Equipment and work area

  • Computer downtime procedures utilized as needed.
  • Maintenance on centrifuges, refrigerators, etc. performed as assigned.
  • Restock supplies before and after shift.
  • Notify supervisor when supplies are low.
  • Performs assigned daily/weekly/monthly maintenance.
  • Work area kept clean and disinfected.
  • Supplies maintained in a neat, orderly manner.
  • Supplies that are expired are discarded.
  • Coordinates and verifies completion of assigned daily/weekly/monthly maintenance or other assigned tasks for other staff.
  • Orders supplies as needed for department.
  • May perform and document computer maintenance for area.
