Building Construction Technology Instructor


HBI is seeking a Building Construction Technology Instructor at Occonaluftee Job Corps Center in Cherokee, NC.


  • Instructs students using current HBI trade curriculum and develops information sheets and supporting materials emphasizing proper use of tools and hardware, equipment use and care, and proper safety precautions.
  • Demonstrates all tasks specific to the trade.
  • Creates lesson plans and reviews Training Achievement Records (TARs) to become familiar with the training sequence and expected student learning rate.
  • Supplements training with hands-on projects, training stations, repair or rehabilitation of on-site structures, as well as the development of new on-site/off-site facilities.
  • Coordinates CTST (Career Technical Skills Training) activities and rehabilitation projects with other trade instructors.
  • Participates in the development of CTST projects, including costs, personnel needed, and duration/completion estimates. Supervises work to be performed by students on the projects, and coordinates tasks with other trades instructor(s), if required.
  • Responsible for adequate supervision of students assigned to his/her trade.
  • Recommends students for job placement, based on skills acquired, maturity level, adequacy of change to transition allowance, and proper work habits and attitude. Notifies RPC and RCDC, giving adequate lead time, so that job development can be initiated prior to student separation.
  • Meets all USDOL mandated criteria by which HBI programs are evaluated.
  • Completes and submits various student and program-related reports and evaluations as required.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly shop in accordance with HBI safety program and OSHA standards.
  • Maintains tool and equipment inventories.
  • Demonstrates cost effectiveness and judicious use of HBI time and materials.
  • Fosters positive relationships with co-workers.
  • Promotes strong work ethic and employability skills among students.
  • Acts as a positive role model for students.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience/Skills/Core Competencies:

  • At least five years’ experience in the applicable trade(s) that are taught or an equivalent combination of education and trades-related experience
  • The candidate in this position will teach all aspects of construction but should have specific experience in Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing or HVAC and at least a working knowledge of other skilled trade areas.
  • Possesses the ability to perform and demonstrate all tasks specific to the trade.
  • The candidate should be well organized and have the flexibility to move seamlessly from one task to another. This is a shop environment where students are learning a skilled trade.
  • Ability to train and communicate effectively with students in a hands-on and classroom environment.
  • Basic MS Office skills and data entry skills needed.
  • Oral and written communications skills (e.g. e-mails, case notes, student evaluations)
  • A current, valid state driver's license.
  • Currently licensed or certified to teach or has the ability to acquire licensing or industry certification to teach the craft(s) within a reasonable time.
  • Ability to obtain first aid, CPR, and OSHA certification within a reasonable amount of time.
