Vocational Specialist

Connections and Rapid Re-Housing services promote consumer choice in housing for individuals within the private rental market. Interventions are designed to reduce barriers to housing and help participants rapidly exit homelessness and maintain stable housing. Service delivery is guided by a Housing First approach, individualized, person-centered housing stability and employment support plans.

The Vocational Specialist will be responsible for assisting clients in choosing, getting, and retaining jobs. They will be tasked with recruiting employers that would be willing to work with our clients, as well as building partnerships with local vocational support agencies. They will also assist clients through individual vocational counseling. This position will require a lot of work out in the community, but will also maintain regular office hours at Connections each week to ensure close coordination with key case management staff.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research and identify suitable employment options for individuals experiencing homelessness, and recruit employers to provide employment opportunities for our program participants. Educate employers about this population, and address potential barriers with employers—such as employee qualifications and job history.
  • Provide information to a wide variety of individuals who seek assistance in the Connections Program.
  • Interact with client population and perform assessments on selected clients.
  • Maintain a vocational case load, developing vocational plans and follow-up strategies.
  • Provide information, referral, advocacy and counseling services to clients.
  • Intervene in crises with individual clients and in the general population of the facility.
  • Closely coordinate with other DESC staff to ensure continuity of services for clients.
  • Communicate effectively with local community and external agencies; successfully foster relationships which enable needed resources to be accessed.
  • Assist clients in finding appropriate employment, based on the client's needs and preferences.
  • Help clients identify and develop the skills they have to be a successful employee. Work collaboratively with clients to identify interests, experiences, skills, strengths and challenges in order to match them successfully with employment opportunities.
  • Work directly with potential employers, current employers, and co-workers of clients.
  • Work in tandem with the Vocational Team to develop career/vocational services for housed and homeless clients. Lead and co-lead vocational groups.
  • Maintain service notes and files in an orderly, up-to-date manner.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Research and identify internal and community vocational services appropriate for clients.
  • Monitor employment opportunities on various community resources.
  • Coordinate communication and act as a liaison between Connections vocational team, housing team, case managers, and relevant employers and vocational service agencies.
  • Respond to email and voicemail daily. Maintain calendar with appointments and availability.
  • Provide coverage for other team members and program as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA degree, preferably in social or behavioral science or business
  • Experience working with the homeless, economically disadvantaged, mentally ill or chemically affected
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and insurable driving record.
  • Assertive, outgoing, comfortable making “cold calls” to potential employers and making presentations on behalf of our clients and program.
  • Computer and Internet skills (e.g. word processing, email, Internet navigation, spreadsheet applications, etc.) and ability to learn new computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with clients and staff from various backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients displaying a wide range of unpleasant and/or bizarre behavior.
  • Commitment to the philosophy of cooperation and continuity across agency programs and to the philosophy of consideration and respect for clients.
  • Ability to meet state requirements for registration as a counselor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in vocational services highly preferred.
