POSITION TITLE: Divisional Music and Creative Arts Director

REPORTS TO (TITLE): Divisional Secretary for Program

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Music & Creative Arts Department exits to inspire, equip, and disciple worshippers and creative minded people through diverse artistic expressions. Our vision is to empower the Metropolitan Division, be a consistent, relevant resource, and be on the forefront of missional engagement through the arts.

 

OUTCOMES

This is a ministry leadership position with the purpose of resourcing the Corps/Division, developing leaders, growing disciples of Jesus and creative minded individuals who will impact ministries in their local Corps contexts.

ResponsibilitiesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mission Engagement

  • Ongoing exploration and expansion of new expressions of creative arts ministry; responsible for following trends and engaging in relevant mediums and inclusion in divisional programming is encouraged.
  • Provide guidance and resources to Corps on mission engagement opportunities through the arts.
  • Effectively resource and support corps in the arts by staying informed of current corps needs and arts trends.
  • Provide guidance to local corps creative arts programming and assist in finding leadership support when needed.
  • Oversee and coordinate the effective implementation of divisional initiatives (i.e. Dance, Metro Youth Band, Metro Youth Chorus, Drama, Visual arts, etc. groups and other new initiatives).
  • Will lead a collaborative team including the Youth Department to provide leadership for the planning and administration of creative art related camps such as Music Camp, Junior Music Camp, Conservatory. Will provide support to the Youth Department for other creative arts related camps.
  • Create and regularly update a strategic missional engagement plan to coordinate and plan initiatives.
  • Periodically evaluates the mission impact of any initiatives, groups and make adjustments when necessary.
  • Musical and creative arts support is provided for divisional events and seasonal activities as requested by the Program Secretary.
  • Leadership Development

  • Strengthen and develop new and potential leaders within all aspects of the arts through practical knowledge, experienced instruction, and providing opportunities for leadership.
  • Identify and establish goals and objectives in the development of creative arts leadership within the division.
  • Identify prospective leaders within the division and develop partnerships with local universities, churches, professional groups as sources of support and volunteers.
  • Provide leadership development opportunities at a minimum of 3 times yearly.
  • Establish and maintain the structure of Metro Youth and Creative Arts initiatives as a means for youth to increase in creative arts proficiency and spiritual leadership skills.
  • Discipleship

  • Create discipleship opportunities for participants in all programs and activities.
  • Encourage Salvationists to express their faith and grow in holiness through creative expression and provide space to do so.
  • Facilitate mentoring relationships between participants and volunteers.
  • Equip young people and adults to share the gospel in a compelling way through the arts.
  • Resource participants and corps on creative arts discipleship materials.
  • Administration

  • Supervision and development of music and creative arts department staff/volunteers.
  • Leads the development of a yearly departmental budget with Program Secretary support. Maintains fiscal accountability for the department's budget.
  • Maintain timely, attractive and efficient communication of events to the division, corps, members of ensembles and a general mailing list through letters, email, the DHQ website, social media, and periodic newsletters.
  • Visit each corps periodically to maintain an up-to-date appraisal of the musical activities within the division to obtain an overview of progress, to determine needed resources and the facilitation and/or distribution of such.
  • Serve as the divisional representative to the Territorial Music and Creative Arts Committee and other divisional/territorial committees, conferences, events as approved by Program Secretary.
  • Manage scheduling of all divisional creative arts groups with the Program Secretary for inclusion on the divisional calendar – planning rehearsals, concerts, trips, etc.
  • Assist the Development Department with funding proposals as needed to sustain department initiatives and to develop collaborations.
  • Oversee that seasonal musicians are effectively recruited, deployed and supervised.
  • Insure the maintenance of the divisional music library, instrument, and creative arts inventory.
  • Will work collaboratively with the Youth Department and other related DHQ departments in planning, strategy, and receiving feedback.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    This position reports to the Divisional Secretary for Program for the Metropolitan Division.

     

    This position supervises the Program Manager and Music Instructors.

     

    In contacts related to this position's duties, this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

    • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree, preferably in music or creative arts.
    • Advanced training in music or creative arts is desired.
    • 5 years experience working with music and creative arts programs, preferably in a Salvation Army leadership setting.
    • Minimum of 2 year's experience supervising and planning Corps arts programs, including working with employees and/or volunteers.
    • Valid Driver's license/MVR clearance

    • A passion for music and creative arts ministry, both outreach and internal development, as an essential part of the church.
    • Strong interest in the training and development of youth and adults in the areas of music and creative arts.
    • Active Christian with a current testimony, who upholds Christian standards and is willing to support the ministry of The Salvation Army in all areas of their job responsibilities.
    • An interpersonal style that engages people from diverse backgrounds and builds understanding and trust.
    • A self-starter who has the demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage projects, priorities and programs in a constantly changing environment.
    • An ability to anticipate and respond to issues in a positive and timely manner.
    • A demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service; anticipating and responding to the needs of officers, soldiers, employees and administration.
    • A communication and management style that is responsive as well as fosters team relationships and effectively communicates information.
    • Skill in teaching groups of all ages in their focus area (music and/or creative arts).
    • A personal knowledge of music including performance, education and theory.
    • An in-depth knowledge of music and/or creative arts ministry, especially within the context of the Army's history, mission, and structure.
    • An understanding Gospel of a variety of current and relevant creative arts at both a theoretical and practical level.
    • Knowledge of social, print, and digital media and how to use them effectively.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially in public presentations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • This position is required to do some physical work and must b able to lift 25 pounds.
    • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to utilize a PC, provide musical direction and instruction.
    • The work environment for this position includes an office, outdoor environment during camps, with an average of loud noise level.

    MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENT

    This position has an essential role in fulfilling the full mission of The Salvation Army. Because of the integral nature of this responsibility, an understanding and promotion of The Salvation Army's mission, doctrine, and policies is required as well as active soldiership in good standing in a Salvation Army Corps.
