Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Perform preventive maintenance and servicing for automotive specialized equipment consisting of sixty-five (65) units of Civil Engineering Support Equipment (CESE), automotive, heavy Diesel, non-diesel equipment, specialized weight handling and material handling, and construction equipment. Perform lubricating and other services on heavy mobile equipment in the field from lubrication field service vehicles equipped with an air compressor, reels, hoses, pumps and guns. Also be skilled in the use of test equipment and measuring devices such as: levels, feeler gauges, calipers, and various electrical testing meters, in order to repair, adjust and test various machinery and equipment. Perform lubricating and other services on heavy mobile equipment in the field from lubrication field service vehicles equipped with an air compressor, reels, hoses, pumps, and guns. Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment. Make repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective diesel engine parts or components. Replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Adjust brakes, transmission linkages, engine idle, voltage and current control valves, sensing valves, expansion valves, and pressure regulator valves. Clean or replace filters, screens, battery cables and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices. Service and check air conditioning systems including purging and recharge systems, flush radiators and replace anti-freeze solution.

  • Perform various tasks in servicing sixty-five (65) units of Civil Engineering Support Equipment (CESE) automotive, heavy Diesel and non-Diesel Equipment, specialized weight handling and material handling equipment, construction equipment, and plant equipment. Perform safety checks and report all discrepancies noticed to contractor supervisor. Drain moisture form air tanks, install alcohol in air systems, change oil and filters on hydraulic systems with operate hoists and tailgates, service fifth wheel on tractors or mechanisms for locking and holding tractors, and repair all sizes of tires.
  • Perform service as needed to sealed beam light bulbs, mirrors, drive belts, hoses, fuel, coolant, lubrication and air components. Repair tires and tubes using appropriate methods and materials (i.e. vulcanizing patches or plugs). Inspect casings for cuts, punctures, separation, dry rot and excessive wear to determine if re-usable. Mount tires and ensure proper inflation pressures are to specifications.
  • CHARGING SYSTEMS: Test charging systems proper output. Replace, adjust, and clean terminals, cables, alternators and belts as needed. Test, charge, clean and change batteries in the shop or in the field. Fill batteries with proper amount and type of electrolyte. Ensure batteries are properly stored and disposal of in a safe and proper manner according to current guidance.
  • COOLING SYSTEMS: Check and repair cooling systems in order to maximize engine life. Pressure test and inspect system components for leaks. Replace, adjust, and clean radiators, hoses, pumps and belts as needed.
  • LUBRICATION: Lubricate all equipment requiring lubrication service including, lube mobile cranes, stationary generators, crawler (tracked) equipment, stationary rock crushers, asphalt plants, concrete plants, wash plants, off highway dump trucks, tractors, trailers, dump trucks, stake trucks, front end loaders, pumps, light trucks and passenger vehicles. Lubrication service shall include wear points such as pivot points, sheaves, cables, rollers, house rollers, pinions, hoist drums, shaft bearings, sprockets, chains and expose gears. Service internal combustion engines, hydraulic, cooling and power transmission systems by changing fluids and filters as required. Check and maintain all fluids to proper level and type. Perform such operations as draining, flushing and refilling gear, chain cases, hydraulic and cooling systems. Clean excess lubricants and fluids from equipment service.

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • Basic operating knowledge of the general automotive vehicles; specialized equipment; weight and material handling equipment; and construction equipment to be serviced under contract in order to test them for proper operation.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in general automotive vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance (includes diagnostics) and repair.
  • Must be skilled in the use of test equipment and measuring devices such as: levels, feeler gauges, calipers, and various electrical testing meters, in order to repair, adjust and test various machinery and equipment.
  • Must be able to  use and read technical publications.
  • Required to have a  knowledge of the Diesel engine characteristics and use of various lubricants, cooling systems, protective agents and hydraulic components.
  • Able to adhere to established safety procedures, to include care and maintenance of equipment and work areas to include routine floor maintenance.
  • Ability to multi task and give special attention to detailed work.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality on sensitive issues/information.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local security procedures are required.
  • Basic Knowledge of OSHA and Safety Regulations (CFR).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
